When do you want to start winding down?
This is the time the countdown runs to. When it reaches zero the wind-down begins — half an hour to finish up, and then the screens go away. You can change either time whenever.
Lights out lands half an hour after the first time. The wake time is only used to tell Screen Time when to stop blocking.
What does "done for the day" look like?
Three small things. At lights-out the app shows this list, you tick them off, and the day is closed. Deciding them now, calmly, is easier than deciding them at 11pm.
No list. At lights out you'll get a single button to say you're done.
This part is optional. Remove them all if you'd rather just have one button at the end. Either way you can change it in Settings.
How should it look?
You'll see this screen every evening, so it may as well be one you like. The colour deepens as lights-out gets closer — pick whichever you'd rather be looking at in a dark room.
Something behind it, if you'd like. Kept faint on purpose.
Both change straight away, and both live in Settings → Design, along with the glow, the speed and the typeface.
Let it reach you
This is the part a browser tab can't do. Without this, the app is a countdown you have to be looking at.
Add to your Home Screen first
On iPhone, notifications only work from an installed app — never from a Safari tab. It's Apple's rule and there's no way around it.
- Tap the Share button at the bottom of Safari.
- Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Open Wind-Down from your Home Screen and come back to this step.
You'll get a quiet notice as your wind-down starts, and one when it's time. Nothing between, nothing after.
Skipping is fine — the countdown still works when the app is open. You can turn this on later in Setup.
Let's prove it works
A test notification, one minute from now. Lock your phone and put it down — that's the only way to know this really reaches you.
The on-screen counter will stop while you're away. That's normal — every browser freezes a backgrounded app's timers. The notification is sent from the server, so it arrives whether this app is open, closed, or force-quit. The counter catches up when you come back.
Nothing showed up? Check Settings → Notifications → Wind-Down, and make sure Wind-Down is allowed through your Sleep Focus.
